In light of the BART strike that almost was, we should consider the sorry state of affairs in our nation’s public transit systems. The federal stimulus package passed earlier this year granted $12 billion in additional funding for both high speed rail and infrastructure improvements, but these appropriations will do nothing to blunt the impact of population growth and a general unwillingness to bring these systems to 21st century standards. With state governments in disarray, perhaps we should start looking at not how much we spend, but what we spend it on.
